Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, Imagine, we are already approaching spring time! Our spiritual and prayer focus for the month of March is Hospitality. March is here and in typical fashion, it will be another very busy month. As we enter this Holy Season of Lent on our liturgical calendars it is important to reflect on Fasting. We began the Lenten season with our “Ash Wednesday Celebration” on Wednesday, February 17. Fasting has been an important Christian ritual, both in the east and in the west, since ancient times. As an important reminder, students will be participating in their second grade level Activity Day on Thursday, March 11; Report Cards and Student, Parent, Teacher Conference forms will be sent home on Friday, March 12. Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 18. Please remember that in order for conferences to be meaningful and improve learning, students must be active participants. As well, there is a Teacher Professional Development Day schedule for Friday March 19; there will be no classes for students. Some parents are already inquiring about final exam schedules; please refer to your child’s Student Agenda June Calendar for final exam dates. Finally, we wish you a wonderful and restful spring break! Mr. Dean Cockburn and Mr. Peter Savill ReflectionThe purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Teutonic (Germanic) word for springtime, can be viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things which hinder our corporate and personal relationships with Jesus Christ and our service to him. Thus it is fitting that the season of Lent begin with a symbol of repentance: placing ashes mixed with oil on one's head or forehead. However, we must remember that our Lenten disciplines are supposed to ultimately transform our entire person: body, soul, and spirit. Our Lenten disciplines are supposed to help us become more like Christ. Eastern Christians call this process theosis, which St. Athanasius aptly describes as "becoming by grace what God is by nature." Father,
